Ga2O3 – GALLIUM (III) OXIDEProperties of gallium (III) oxide: White, refractory, not volatile compound. Semiconductor. Does not react with water. In the calcined form it is chemically passive. Shows amphoteric properties. It is transferred to solution by concentrated acids and alkalis. Reduced by hydrogen.
Methods for preparation of gallium (III) oxide: 2Ga(OH)3 = Ga2O3 + 3H2O (540-600° C). 4Ga(NO3)3 = 2Ga2O3 + 12NO2 + 3O2 (110-200° C). 2Ga2(SO4)3 = 2Ga2O3 + 6SO2 + 3O2 (520-700° C). 2Ga2S3 + 9O2 = 2Ga2O3 + 6SO2 (500-750° C). Chemical reactions with gallium (III) oxide: Ga2O3 + 6HCl(conc.) = 2GaCl3 + 3H2O. Ga2O3 + 2NaOH(conc., hot) + 3H2O = 2Na[Ga(OH)4], Ga2O3 + 2NaOH = 2NaGaO2 + H2O (above 150° C). Ga2O3 + 3H2 = 2Ga + 3H2O (700° C). Ga2O3 + 3SCl2O = 2GaCl3 + 3SO2 (200° C), Ga2O3 + 6NH4Cl = 2GaCl3 + 6NH3 + 3H2O (250° C). Ga2O3 + 6NaHSO4 = Ga2(SO4)3 + 3Na2SO4 + 3H2O (350-400° C). Ga2O3 + ZnCO3 = (ZnGa2)O4 + CO2 (900-1000° C). Ga2O3 + 3H2S = Ga2S3 + 3H2O (600-700° C). Ga2O3 + 2NH3 = 2GaN + 3H2O (1000-1200° C). Ga2O3 + 4Ga = 3Ga2O (500° C). |
