Ga(NO3)3 – GALLIUM (III) NITRATE

Properties of gallium (III) nitrate:

White, decomposes when heated. It is readily soluble in water (hydrolysis on cation). It reacts with bases, ammonium hydroxide. Participates in exchange reactions.

Methods for preparation of gallium (III) nitrate:

Ga + 6HNO3(conc.) = Ga(NO3)3 + 3NO2↑ + 3H2O.


Chemical reactions with gallium (III) nitrate:

4Ga(NO3)3 = 2Ga2O3 + 12NO2 + 3O2 (110-200° C).

Ga(NO3)3 • 9H2O = Ga(NO3)3 + 9H2O (40-60° C, vacuum).

Ga(NO3)3(diluted) + 6H2O = [Ga(H2O)6](3+) + 3NO(-)3,

[Ga(H2O)6](3+) + H2O = [Ga(H2O)5(OH)](2+) + H3O(+).

Ga(NO3)3 + 3NaOH(diluted) = Ga(OH)3↓ + 3NaNO3,

Ga(NO3)3 + 4NaOH(conc., hot) = Na[Ga(OH)4] + 3NaNO3.

Ga(NO3)3 + 3(NH3 • H2O)[diluted] = Ga(OH)3↓ + 3NH4NO3,

Ga(NO3)3 + 4(NH3 • H2O)[conc., cold] = NH4[Ga(OH)4] + 3NH4NO3.

Ga(NO3)3 + 3HF(diluted) = GaF3↓ + 3HNO3.

Ga(NO3)3 + K3PO4 = GaPO4↓ + 3KNO3.

2Ga(NO3)3 + 6HO + 3Na2S = 2Ga(OH)3↓ + 3H2S↑ + 6NaNO3.
